Unboxing & Installing the Viking Patriot Bags
In Part 1, I laid out the primary goal for this first phase: adding functionality & luggage space for the Dyna. As a photographer, being able to haul expensive gear, reliably is non-negotiable. The Viking Patriot 18L throw-over saddlebags finally arrived at the house, and after getting them mounted up, here is how they hold up in the real world.
First Impression & Fitment
Right out of the box, the first thing I noticed was how sturdy these feel. Throw-over bags usually have a bad reputation for sagging and looking sloppy, but these hold their frame completely solid, even when empty.
Getting them onto the Lowrider was painless. I installed the mounting brackets first, which was as simple as pulling out four fender bolts and sliding the brackets right into place. From there, adjusting the straps was quick and easy to dial in the exact height, keeping the bags tight to the frame while clearing the shocks and pipes with plenty of room to spare.
Build Quality, Storage & Weather Performance
Beyond holding their shape, the overall build quality on these bags is top tier. The zippers are heavy duty, smooth, and don't feel like they're going to catch or blow out when the bags are packed full. The integrated MOLLE straps along the exterior are a huge plus. They allow for quick attachment points to clip extra gear, tools, or fuel bottles right to the outside of the bags.
Inside, the layout is clean and functional. The 18-liter capacity gives you plenty of room for extra layers, daily essentials, or camera kit, while internal pockets keep smaller items like keys, cables, and documents organized instead of lost at the bottom.
When it comes to the elements, the outer material handles normal road spray and light rain without missing a beat. For heavy downpours, water can eventually seep through the stitched seams over extended rides or while sitting in the parking lot, while you are off enjoying your lunch. Viking includes dedicated rain covers with the bags, so if the sky opens up, throwing the bivy covers on, will keep everything inside totally dry.
The Verdict
Overall, the Viking Patriot 18L throwovers, hit the exact sweet spot for a daily use set of bags. The solid build quality, and clean styling, give me the storage space I need for my run and gun camera set up and daily errands without looking bulky or clunky on the Dyna. If you're looking for practical, clean looking luggage for daily riding, these are a solid choice.
